The Problem:
412 Active Shooter Incidents 2000-2021
In 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2021, the FBI initiated a study of “active shooter” incidents to provide federal, state, and local law enforcement with data so they can better understand how to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from these incidents.

The pie chart shows a statistical breakdown of the location categories where the 277 active shooter incidents took place in the U.S. from 2000 to 2018.

3,112 Active Shooter Casualties
The map graphic contains several snapshot statistics of the active shooter incidents that occurred in the United States from 2000 to 2018. These statistics include 277 active shooter incidents and 3,112 casualties, including 1,128 killed and 1,984 wounded.
FBI Conclusion
All 50 FBI active shooter-designated incidents during the 2016-2017 time frame were single-shooter events, and all shooters were male.
Armed and unarmed citizens engaged the shooter in 10 incidents. They safely and successfully ended the shootings in eight of those incidents. Their selfless actions likely saved many lives.
The enhanced threat posed by active shooters and the swiftness with which active shooter incidents unfold support the importance of preparation by law enforcement officers and citizens alike.
